What's this, Mom?

While unpacking kitchen boxes a few weeks ago, my oldest pulled out a gadget and asked, "What's this, Mom?"

"That is a juicer."
"What do you use it for?"  Apparently in the 9 years that I have owned this little gadget, it has not gotten much use around here...
"You can squeeze fresh oranges on it and the juice falls through those little holes, to make fresh orange juice."
"Can we use it to make some orange juice?"  I had a feeling that was coming....

So, last week at the grocery store I bought a bag of oranges...

And we began juicing...

and juicing....

but the oranges just didn't look or smell quite as "orange" as I had expected....

"Uh, Mom, did you read the package before you bought them?"

What do you mean "read the package?"  I just grabbed a bag of oranges.

"Over there on the bag....did you read the package?"

Oh, I see now.

"Do I have to do everything around here?  Why is it nobody ever listens to me?"

Well, the motto around here is "Waste Not, Want Not" so we now have 1.5 pints of grapefruit juice.

Eli couldn't quite handle it...

Maggie liked it....but she liked it even more after I added 2 teaspoons of sugar.

Matthew thought it was a little tart.

We tried to trick daddy and give him a taste, not letting him know it was grapefruit, but as soon as he drank it, he immediately said "Grapefruit juice?" without the slightest grimace.  Nothing gets by him.

So, I think we will be sticking to this orange juice for this week.

 Maybe next week....

Speaking of next week, beginning tomorrow you can expect a series on the home renovation project that has pretty much taken over our 2010, complete with lots of before, during and after pictures.
